This is a new section on current technology services in the web 2.0 that are free to use.Technology can be very intimidating to most of us, but it also helps in reducing our every day morning stress. This section is aimed at people who are not geeks but who require free or easy to use tools.

Today’s Topic is about email system.

Do you remember a time, when you were given a measly amount of storage space of around less than 10MB by some email providers to few hundred MB by most of them.To add to the frustration spam emails were responsible for utilizing most of the space which left you as a user with limited space.

The concept of email was radically changed when Google entered the scene with 1 GB of user space which itself was huge but they then changed it to 2 GB and now it is around 4-5GB.This is enough for your entire lifetime, unless you are a heavy user. Moreover, the effective spam filter of Gmail has also relieved much headache due to spam mail.

However, controversy persists around their advertising policy, which targets context based ads on your email message. This raises doubt over the privacy policy even though the ads are claimed to be inserted by automated logarithms. These ads sometimes are useful,as you could find more about companies which you never even would have thought existed.

In today’s world online privacy is of distant past, when you are constantly exposed to internet.

The most important aspect of Google email is the domain application feature, which enables you to have your own domain name and redirected to Google mail application provider service,in return you will have a professional email ID with backend service provided by Google. You don’t need to have an information technologist to control your mail server. The email could then be seamlessly accessed through your web browser on Desktop, laptop and also smart phone.

Personal Health Vault-Personal Health Record

Health records to go electronic or not ? That’s the question across the world now.

In Canada,a recent survey recent survey sponsored by Canada Health Infoway, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, and Health Canada showed that about 87 per cent of those polled believe EHRs will make diagnosis quicker and more accurate, while 82 per cent believe they will reduce prescription error.

Eighty-four per cent of respondents would like to be able to access their own medical records online, while 77 per cent would like audit trails that document access to their health information.

Canada info-way a non-profit organization is working on implementing electronic health records nationwide.

But,across the atlantic ocean in a survey among GP’s across U.K a poll by by Medix, a healthcare online research organization previously used by the Department of Health to test medical opinion, found that 59% of GPs in England are unwilling to upload any record without the patient’s specific consent. They feared hacking of patient’s record and bribery or blackmail of people with access to the their health records can further precipitate loss of privacy with identity theft.

To conclusively, prove that health records online can serve significant benefits is a long and tedious battle ahead whether it is for Microsoft or Google.

This is a new section on current technology services in the web 2.0 that are free to use.Technology can be very intimidating to most of us, but it also helps in reducing our every day morning stress. This section is aimed at people who are not geeks but who require free or easy to use tools.

One of the tools that we use everyday is word documentation, remember the time, when we had to work across multiple computers at work and at home and if on road with portable computer.

You had to save your files or documents on a floppy disk and then re-use it across multiple computers,if you are lucky they worked well but most of the times, they crashed if the disk becomes corrupt. Moreover, you had to worry about virus infection if you used it on a unknown- un protected computer. Also you had to juggle across multiple floppies as capacity in each was limited to 1.44 MB.Then came the era of USB-flash drive, this was robust and allowed us to accomodate upto 1GB now even 4 -160 GB,but again you had to save the information on these drives, risk losing your drive or misplacing them at work or home and also tugg them along.

But, now we have an alternative in that we can use and store every bit of information online. You could then access them anytime, anywhere when connected.

ZOHO is one such free web based information management tool.they have all office suite platform integrated into a single account. Moreover, you could save the word doc across multiple formats like .doc,.pdf and open office .dt.It is convient,in that simple word documents and comments could be written on any computer and you could access them via web anywhere,no more need to carry any USB drive.
It has a account for spreadsheet and presentation too, although similar to google docs, but the writer application has more features when compared to google docs.

Pithfalls

The the spell check feature is not yet robust.
The presentation application has limited templates.

When you are travelling, these tools can be come in real handy. With security check across airport changing-you had to always worry about removing your laptop and hardrives during multiple security checks and then if you travel across muliple cities-this had to be done every time you change your flight.I constantly worry about losing my data drives at the security check points.

Online tools could be useful at these times. However,to note:

You cannot use it to store sensitive and vital documents as they are stored on the web,and we do not know where the data is hosted and stored.

But,for all other non sensitive documents work and storage it works fine.
